Positive Digital Parenting

The Digital Education Action Plan (2021-2027) outlines the European Commission’s vision for reshaping education to meet the demands of the digital age by delivering high-quality, inclusive, and accessible digital education. One of the plan’s strategic priorities is to enhance digital skills and competencies necessary for digital transformation, which includes digital and media literacy.
Parents play a critical role in educating their children about early digital skills and behaviors. They need to be equipped to understand the importance of protecting and empowering their children online and to contribute to creating a safe online environment.
These goals emphasize the active involvement of parents in line with the requirements for a trustworthy and secure online environment set by the European Union’s Digital Decade Strategy for 2030. Therefore, parental engagement is crucial for achieving the targets established by the EU’s 2030 Digital Decade Strategy.
About the Project
OBJECTIVES
Providing parents with media literacy knowledge and tools to help their children develop critical thinking skills when engaging with digital media: analyzing online content, recognizing biases, detecting misinformation, and making informed decisions in digital environments. By combining critical thinking with media literacy, parents can better prepare their children to navigate the digital world responsibly and selectively.
To equip adult educators and trainers with the necessary expertise to effectively teach parents in the fields of digital and media literacy, learning resources and innovative tools will be developed to strengthen competencies through informal education.
Target Group
The target groups are adult educators, adult education centers, and civil society organizations working with or for adults. The second target group consists of parents (adult learners). Invitations will also be sent to local authorities for both activities.
The primary beneficiaries are parents and their children; they also benefit from the family learning kit introduction, through which parents gain information on how to learn about digital and media literacy within their families.
Results
The “POSITIVE DIGITAL PARENTING” project aims to support parents in becoming effective educators for their children in the digital environment. The project acknowledges the crucial role parents play in teaching digital skills, media literacy, and online safety to their children. It seeks to address the gap in media literacy education for parents by achieving the following outcomes:
PDP LEARNING TOOLKIT: This toolkit will provide age-appropriate learning materials for family members of different age groups. It will likely include resources, guides, and activities that parents and children can engage with together to enhance their understanding of digital media, online safety, and responsible internet use.
Project Website: The project will have a dedicated website serving as a central hub for sharing information, resources, updates, and progress related to the project’s goals and activities. It will be a valuable platform where parents, educators, and other stakeholders can access relevant information and materials.
In-Service Training Program for Adult Educators: This training program will focus on equipping adult educators and trainers with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively teach parents about digital and media literacy. Educators working in adult education will learn best practices for guiding parents on navigating the digital world and supporting their children’s online experiences.
